Merzbow: Latest 10 Albums
26 tracks
The ten most recent Merzbow full-lengths actually streaming on Spotify (Feb 2025 through May 2026), sampled two-to-three tracks deep per record: harsh-noise-wall solo sessions (Epsilon, Ogres, Bariken Returned, Merzbuddha V2, Mimesis, Parakeet) alongside three collaborations — the koto-and-drum-machine duo Sedonis, the Amazon-rainforest-themed drone piece with ex-Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera and guitarist Eraldo Bernocchi (Nocturnal Rainforest), and the glitch-pop-adjacent Rococo ∞ Echomatter with Chicago's Kikù Hibino. A real-time snapshot of where Japan's most prolific noise artist is right now, not a greatest-hits.

Research behind this playlist
Brief: "haven't heard any new merzbow albums in a while... latest 10 merzbow albums." Merzbow (Masami Akita) is famously the most prolific noise artist alive — hundreds of albums, often several per month, spread across dozens of tiny labels (his own Bandcamp outlets plus Old Europa Cafe, Slowdown, Signal Noise, PAN, Modern Obscure Music, Helicopter, Superpang, etc). There is no single authoritative "latest albums" feed. I cross-referenced Wikipedia's Masami Akita discography page, Bandcamp label pages, and WebSearch summaries of Discogs/RateYourMusic/AlbumOfTheYear (direct WebFetch to those three returned 403 every time, so I relied on search-result snippets plus direct Bandcamp/label-page fetches) to build a reliable release-date-ordered list.
Step 1 — establishing the true "latest 10" by date (today = 2026-07-18). Newest-first candidates found: (1) Vapor Hoof (Etherworld) — 17 Jul 2026, confirmed via a gatekeepmusic.com weekly-releases roundup literally dated 17.07.26, i.e. released yesterday; (2) Bardo Thödol (w/ Pedro Vian, Modern Obscure Music) — 10 Jul 2026, per Tower/Jackpot Records pre-order pages, tracks "Bardo Thodol phase I/II" confirmed via merzbow.bandcamp.com; (3) Synthesis Post-Contact (Old Europa Cafe tape tied to a 29 May 2026 live gig, mixed Jan 2026); (4) Rococo ∞ Echomatter (w/ Kikù Hibino, Superpang) — 29 May 2026, 8 tracks, tracklist confirmed via rococo-infinity-echomatter.bandcamp.com, with an open.spotify.com/album link surfacing in search too; (5) Epsilon (Slowdown) — 15 May 2026, 2 tracks; (6) The Pigeon's Chronostasis (Slowdown) — 17 Apr 2026, 5 tracks; (7) Ogres (Slowdown) — 5 Feb 2026, 4 tracks; (8) Brick Wall Evolution (w/ Bastard Noise, Alimentary Music/Matism Records) — 10 Jan 2026, 350-copy vinyl LP, no tracklist ever surfaced despite checking Matism's shop page, Discogs (403 on WebFetch) and feelitrecordshop.com (which only described "two lengthy tracks" with no titles given); (9) Merzbuddha V2 — 9 Jan 2026, 7 tracks; (10) Bariken Returned (Slowdown) — 4 Dec 2025, 5 tracks.
Step 2 — verifying against Spotify, since the actual deliverable has to be playable. Ran all of the above through the guardrail dry-run. Vapor Hoof, Bardo Thödol, and Synthesis Post-Contact all came back MISMATCH — every track fell through Spotify's loose fallback search and landed on unrelated songs (Frank Zappa's 'Porn Wars', Depeche Mode's 'Blasphemous Rumours', BABYMETAL, a random synthwave artist called TR4KST4R) because the real titles simply aren't in Spotify's catalog yet. Makes sense: these are brand-new releases (this week/month) on tiny noise/vinyl labels, and Merzbow's catalog typically lands on streaming weeks-to-months after physical release, if ever, for the scrappier imprints. I didn't even candidate-test Brick Wall Evolution without a confirmed tracklist — guessing titles for a 350-copy vinyl LP is exactly the impostor trap the guardrail exists to prevent, so I treated it as very likely non-streaming and moved on.
So the honest "latest 10 Merzbow albums" a listener can actually press play on right now is a slightly older list than the absolute release-date ranking. I walked back through the discography date-by-date testing each candidate against Spotify: Kachouzu (freizumabriss, 28 Nov 2025, 4 tracks "Kachouzu Part 1-4") — all four fell through to a bogus 'Woodpecker No. 1' (Pulse Demon) fallback match, confirmed absent by a separate 'Merzbow Kachouzu open.spotify.com' search turning up nothing. A Wheel of Mani (w/ Pedro Vian, Modern Obscure Music, 6 Oct 2025, vinyl-exclusive per Piccadilly Records) — both tracks fell through to bogus fallbacks ('Promotion Man', 'Woodpecker No. 1'); multiple vinyl-retailer pages (Soundohm, Boomkat, Piccadilly, Dead Tank, decks.de) but zero streaming links anywhere. Akashaplexia (w/ John Wiese, Helicopter, 13 Nov 2025, 4xCD box of four 45-minute tracks) — all four titles mismatched; a 4xCD limited box of hour-long pieces isn't streaming-shaped content anyway. Sporangium (Old Europa Cafe, 1 Aug 2025, 300-copy digipak CD) — all three tracks mismatched. Paulownia (Sun & Moon Records, 30 Nov 2025, colored vinyl LP) — both tracks mismatched.
Every one of those shares a pattern: small European/boutique physical labels (Old Europa Cafe, Modern Obscure Music, Sun & Moon, freizumabriss, Helicopter, Alimentary/Matism) that press Merzbow for the collector market and skip digital distribution. By contrast, every album on Slowdown (Merzbow's own direct-to-Bandcamp outlet) that I tested resolved cleanly on the first try with correct titles — Epsilon, The Pigeon's Chronostasis, Ogres, Bariken Returned, Mimesis, and Parakeet. Merzbuddha V2 (self-released, same direct pattern) also matched. Signal Noise (Sedonis) and the higher-profile one-off collabs on PAN (Nocturnal Rainforest, w/ Iggor Cavalera & Eraldo Bernocchi) and Superpang (Rococo ∞ Echomatter, w/ Kikù Hibino) came through clean too — bigger labels with real digital distribution deals.
Final 10, newest to oldest, all Spotify-verified: Rococo ∞ Echomatter (29 May 2026, Superpang) > Epsilon (15 May 2026, Slowdown) > The Pigeon's Chronostasis (17 Apr 2026, Slowdown) > Ogres (5 Feb 2026, Slowdown) > Merzbuddha V2 (9 Jan 2026) > Bariken Returned (4 Dec 2025, Slowdown) > Mimesis (11 Nov 2025, Slowdown) > Nocturnal Rainforest (3 Oct 2025, PAN) > Sedonis (27 Jun 2025, Signal Noise) > Parakeet (20 Feb 2025, Slowdown).
Picked 2-3 tracks per album (26 total, all 26/26 verified OK) to give a real sense of each record without an 8-hour marathon — Merzbow tracks routinely run 5-25 minutes so even 2-3 per album adds up to a substantial listen. For Rococo ∞ Echomatter I kept the tracks showcasing different textures (opener dB.XYZ, the Patrick Shiroishi feature saxxxrum, the title-referencing ∞ Echomatter) and dropped the other five. For Ogres I dropped Part 3 (the longest, ~15min) to keep pacing reasonable, keeping 1/2/4 for the dynamic arc. For Sedonis kept A/B plus the 'Monolith 4' closer, dropped C. Merzbuddha V2 and Bariken Returned similarly trimmed from 7/5 down to 3 each.
Guardrail notes: used --allow-multi because several of these are legitimate credited collaborations (Merzbow + Kikù Hibino; Merzbow + Eraldo Bernocchi + Iggor Cavalera) — MULTI exists to catch accidental various-artist mismatches, not to block genuine co-billed Merzbow releases. Used --allow-dupes because the entire point of this playlist is many tracks by the same artist across different albums — the DUPE guardrail (max 1 track per artist) is built for typical varied-artist playlists and doesn't apply to a single-artist discography survey. Never used --allow-mismatch: every MISMATCH resolved to a genuinely unrelated artist/track (Zappa, Depeche Mode, BABYMETAL, TR4KST4R, Replicanted, Casket Ring, etc.), the exact impostor pattern the tool exists to catch, and I independently corroborated via web search that those newer/rarer releases are plausibly just not on Spotify rather than mis-titled by me.
